For both sides, the result was a first in the Ranji Trophy this season. Haryana have 11 points after four games, while UP have 14 after five matches.

Haryana could have garnered full points in the match, had they achieved the 70 runs needed to win without losing a wicket. But they lost opener Nitin Saini (22, 55b, 4x4) and had to remain content with five points.

An early end was very much expected on Friday after Joginder Sharma's 6/39 wrapped up UP's second innings for paltry 174, a few minutes before lunch. Injured Sudeep Tyagi did not bat.

Though Tanmay (60, 137, 8x4) and Parvinder Singh (58*, 98b, 8x4, 1x6) resisted, man-of-the-match Joginder's accurate swing bowling at the quick strip of the Mohan Meakins Stadium, spelt doom for the hosts.

Resuming at 68/3, UP's second innings didn't last long and ended 20 minutes before lunch.

Joginder started the slide having UP skipper Mohd Kaif (11) leg before wicket in his second over of the day.

Ashish Yadav's Ranji career started badly. For the second successive time, he got out on the very first ball.

Seventy was an easy target for Haryana and Nitin Saini and Rahul Dewan chipped at it by adding 45 for the first-wicket. Then it remained a mere formality for Dewan (34*, 55b, 7x4) and S Singh (7*, 11b, 1x4) to script a facile win.

The loss, however, has put UP in a tight position for a knockout berth, and now they have to do their best in their last match against Karnataka, at Kanpur.

Brief Scores: UP 167 and 174 all out (C Saini 60, P Singh not out 58; J Sharma 6/59). Haryana 272 and 72/1 (R Dewan not out 34).
