'It was a chance, you have let it go': Aakash concerned about India star 'wasting his opportunities' against Sri Lanka

Rishabh Pant once again dished out an entertaining knock while Shreyas Iyer continued his run-scoring fest to help India gain control of the ongoing pink-ball game in Bengaluru. Pant, known for his fearless batting approach, struck a 31-ball 50 to record the fastest Test fifty by an Indian, obliterating the 30-ball effort by Kapil Dev against Pakistan in 1982. Iyer also carried from where he left in the first innings, scoring 67 off 87 balls with help of nine boundaries.

Captain Rohit also notched up a brilliant 46 at the start, putting up a show of his footwork and sweep shots to negate the threat of opposition bowlers. But his partner Mayank Agarwal again squandered while opening the innings. The local boy edged one from left-arm spinner Lasith Embuldeniya, who got the ball to turn away from good length and had Mayank caught by Dhananjaya de Silva.

Mayank had also frittered away a good start in the first innings and former India international Aakash Chopra feels the opener is "wasting his opportunities" when someone like KL Rahul is away from the set-up.

"Mayank Agarwal is wasting his opportunities. You didn't play well in Kanpur, it was being felt that you might not play in Mumbai but got to play because of injuries and scored a lot of runs, which is fantastic," said Chopra on his YouTube channel.

"Then you go to South Africa, you play one good knock and then the situation becomes topsy-turvy. You come to India and get out in the first match and both innings here. KL Rahul is sitting out, you have not scored those many runs that when the next Test match happens and KL Rahul is available, you are played.

"It is going to be a problem. It was a chance, you have let it go. There were better chances to score runs in Mohali but that didn't happen. Here the conditions were slightly difficult - you got run out in the first innings and got dismissed in the second innings," the cricketer-turned-commentator further said.

Chopra was effusive in his praise for Rohit, who was "sensational" during his stay at the crease. Rohit added 42 runs with Mayank and 56 for the second wicket with Hanuma Vihari (35), who also perished after a decent start. Sri Lanka ended the day at 28 for one and would need a miracle to save the Test where they still need 419 more runs.

"So I am slightly concerned about Mayank Agarwal but I am extremely impressed with Rohit Sharma. Although he scored only 46 runs but that is a lot of runs on this pitch, it is like 86 on any other pitch. The way he played was absolutely sensational, he had a game plan," Chopra elaborated.
