India vs New Zealand, Champions Trophy 2025 Highlights: Varun Chakravarthy had a few nights to forget in the UAE the last time he played international cricket here but he has returned to the venue with a bang and then some. Being given a chance to play for the first time in this Champions Trophy, Chakravarthy led the Indian spinners' domination of the New Zealand batters and finished with figures of 5/42. India thus beat New Zealand by 44 runs in their final group game and confirmed a date with Australia in the semi-final that will be played on Tuesday. ...Read More
Axar Patel was the player who started the chokehold that India's spinners have employed on New Zealand today but he looked set to finish his spell wicketless. However, he ended up getting a scalp off the last ball after all and it was none other than Kane Williamson who fell. The former New Zealand captain was the only one who seemed capable of navigating the Indian attack and he was holding all of New Zealand's hopes going into the last 10 overs. He fell on 81 off 120 balls.
Williamson was pretty much the only New Zealand batter who could withstand the chokehold applied by the Indian spinners after the first 10 overs. The former New Zealand captain ground out his half-century in 77 balls. Varun Chakravarthy dismissed the in-form Will Young in the 12th over after Hardik Pandya gave India an early breakthrough as they defend a target of 250 in their final group game of the Champions Trophy against New Zealand in Dubai. India have their work cut out, though, with New Zealand having the legendary Kane Williamson out there with the in-form Tom Latham.
Shreyas Iyer's half-century and a late charge from Hardik Pandya took India to a score of 249/9 in 50 overs as New Zealand stayed on them throughout their innings with the ball and in the field. Matt Henry got a five-wicket haul returning figures of 5/42 while Kyle Jamieson conceded just 31 runs in eight overs. New Zealand's spinners also ensured that India don't manage to score at too quick a rate in the middle overs.
Iyer scored 79 in 98 balls while Pandya scored a run-a-ball 45. Iyer continued his good form, registering a mighty fine half-century, but just when his partnership with Axar Patel was nearing a century, Rachin Ravindra broke the partnership and sent the Indian all-rounder packing. Axar and Shreyas took time to settle in, but once they did, boundaries began to come by after a long, hard spell of India struggling to break free.
A little earlier, India scored their first boundary after 51 balls with Axar Patel breaking the shackles. The going was tough in the last few overs as India lost Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to go three down for 30 after being put in to bat. Rohit got off to a flying start but it was a rare single-figure score for Shubman Gill as he fell to Matt Henry in the third over. Kohli began with intent but it was that man again, Glenn Phillips, who took a one-handed screamer in 0.62 seconds to end Kohli's outing in his 300th ODI with a whimper.
New Zealand are bowling first with Mitchell Santner winning the toss. Rohit Sharma said that India would've wanted to bat first any way. India have rested Hasrhit Rana and included Varun Chakravarthy in their squad while New Zealand have brought back Daryl Mitchell for Devon Conway.
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: India's run rate dips below 3.50, India 44/3 in 13 overs
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: Well, it is all about some backs-to-the-wall batting, both these players can accelerate later on and India still have KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya yet to come after this.
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: New Zealand win the first powerplay, India 37/3 in 10 overs
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: Well it is fair to say that Glenn Phillips has made the difference with that catch. India would've felt much more secure if they were only two wickets down with Kohli out there at the end of the first 10 overs. That is not the case now, the players out there are Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel. Still a little surprising that India are sticking to Axar ahead of Rahul for No.5 despite it still being the first 10 overs.
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: Just 3 runs off the 8th, India 33/3 in 8 overs
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: India haven't really been challenged in the ODIs they have played this year and so this is definitely something different for them. They stick to Axar Patel at No.5, Shreyas Iyer at the other end and these two need to put up a big partnership for India to post anything competitive now.
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: OUT! ANOTHER PHILLIPS SCREAMER AND KOHLI FALLS! India 30/3 in 6.4 overs
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: Well we all are amazed, as is Virat Kohli, but this is just another day in the office for the amazing Glenn Phillips. Short and wide from Henry fourth ball of the seventh, Kohli times his extravagant cut shot to perfection and it would've gone past the fielder at point for four most times. But not when the fielder is Phillips. He leaps to his right, stretches out his right hand and catches the ball. Kohli stands there stunned, everyone is stunned. This is just ridiculous fielding.
Kohli c Phillips b Henry 11 (14)
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: GONE! Jamieson strikes now and it's Rohit Sharma, India 22/2 in 5.1 overs
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: The pull shot gave Rohit his first boundary of the day and it also leads to his dismissal. Back of a length just outside off, it swung just a bit and Rohit seems to be a little quick on the shot. Caught at square leg.
Rohit Sharma c Young b Jamieson 15 (17)
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: FOUR! Early aggression from Kohli! India 21/1 in 5 overs
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: Just two runs off the fourth over, second for Kyle Jamieson. Matt Henry continues in the fifth, the first two balls are worked by Kohli to square leg for no runs. The third ball is fuller outside off, Kohli sends this over mid-on for a four. No runs after that in that over though.
Kohli on four off seven, Rohit on 15 off 16.
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: GONE! Rare failure for Gill, India 15/1 in 2.5 overs
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: LBW given and Shubman Gill's review is unsuccesful as well. Big appeal off the fifth ball of the third over by Henry. Umpire raises his finger immediately, Gill has a word with Rohit and then reviews. Length ball that tails into Gill, no bat on it at all and ball tracking shows the top of the leg stump being hit.
Virat Kohli walks out now, he had scored an unbeaten century in the last match, remember.
Gill lbw b Henry 2 (7)
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: FOUR! Rohit Sharma is underway
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: Henry had Rohit on his toes throughout that over but then dropped the last ball short. Rohit is into the act quickly, plants his backfoot and unfurls his famous pull shot, ball travels over midwicket and reaches the boundary for four runs. Rohit had inside edged the first ball past his stumps and ran two. He was properly beaten off the fourth and fifth balls.
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill open for India
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: All right here we go then! Matt Henry is bowling the first over for New Zealand, Rohit on strike with Gill at the other end.
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: Time for the National Anthems!
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: The two captains have led their sides out, the players are standing adjacent to each other with the match officials between them. First comes India's national anthem and then New Zealand's.
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: New Zealand forced to leave out Conway
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: Devon Conway hasn't been too bad and, indeed, it was looking like he was only now regaining his touch. But, such is the quality in this squad that he was pretty much the only player who could be left out to bring back Daryl Mitchell.
New Zealand XI: Will Young, Rachin Ravindra, Kane Williamson, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham(w), Glenn Phillips, Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner(c), Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, William O'Rourke
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: How India line up today
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: Good news for India is that Rohit and Shami are both fit enough to play today.
India XI: Rohit Sharma(c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, KL Rahul(w), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: Varun Chakravarthy in for Harshit Rana
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: Rohit Sharma says that he would've batted first anyhow. He says that India have chosen to rest Harshit Rana and brought in Varun Chakravarthy. For New Zealand, Daryl Mitchell comes back and Devon Conway has been dropped.
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: TOSS TIME!
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: It's time for the flick of the coin. Rohit Sharma is seen undergoing some fitness test. The suspense around him remains intact.
Mitchell Santner has won the toss and New Zealand are bowling first.
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: Can Virat Kohli light up his 300th ODI?
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: Only three names come to mind when you think of India's ODI behemoths. Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli. Today, he becomes the seventh Indian cricketer to play 300 ODIs, joining legendary company. Mohammad Azharuddin, Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, and Yuvraj Singh are the others who have reached milestone 300. Among all these geniuses, only Ganguly and Dravid scored half-centuries in their 300th ODI, while Dhoni scored 49. Can Kohli, who is capable of making such occasions special, get a big one in front of his family and million fans?
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: What about the stadiums?
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: A lot of vacant seats in the stadiums as the broadcast begins but at the same time, it's not much different to what it's been thus far in the Champions Trophy. Expect the seats to start filling as the match begins, and then some around 4:00 PM local time. Of course, it may not be as packed as last Sunday since people around the world travelled to Dubai to catch a glimpse of the India vs Pakistan game. Still, expect a decent crowd turnout as we get closer to action.
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: Half an hour to go for toss
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: Rohit Sharma hasn't been the luckiest when it comes to winning tosses. In fact, he has lost the last 12 tosses as captain of India, but he, you, us will believe that toss is not even half the battle won. Exactly why India have been unbeaten in their last five ODIs. On Dubai pitches, where the ball seems to be having a good carry, the toss may matter, albeit just slightly. Will the fortunes change for Rohit, or will he be struck down by the curse of the 13? Stay tuned. The toss isn't too far away.
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: New Zealand team is here but no signs of Team India yet
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: Our man at the venue, who just arrived at the press box, senses some movement but it's all from the New Zealand camp. "I can see some Kiwi activity but no sign of the Indians except the throwdown guys," is his update from the venue. However, here's some unexpected news. The Australia team is also in Dubai and the players are practicing. We're hearing that the South Africans will be here too. Because, of course, whoever isn't playing the semi here will fly back to Lahore tomorrow with New Zealand.
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: Is the Law of Average really a thing?
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: Well, debatable. The worst example of this from the Indian team's POV is the 2023 World Cup final, where, despite winning 10 matches in a row, the Men in Blue came up just short in the summit clash. Then again, seven months later, the same team went on to win the T20 World Cup unbeaten. So while, yes, it is a thing, more so in ODIs, there's no guarantee it will strike a team down.
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: And then there were FOUR!
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: Two years ago, at the 2023 World Cup, the four teams that reached the semi-finals were India, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand. Cut to the 2025 Champions Trophy, and the four teams that have made the semifinals again are India, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand. Nothing's changed. This is a testament to how well-oiled and rounded this team has been. To be consistent over two years makes the team stand out, and rest assured, you won't find a team showing the same killer instincts as these four.
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: Glenn Phillips, one of NZ's nice guys
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: With all the hoopla surrounding India's advantage claim, Glenn Phillips has played down the whole idea and wants to focus only on what New Zealand need to do to beat Rohit Sharma and his team. Well, for once, someone's interested in their cricket and not someone else's. Phillips, who once did 800 push-ups a day and is easily one of world cricket's greatest fielders, says the Kiwis have a 'no-excuse' mindset and will deal with things as they are.
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: Don't forget Shreyas Iyer
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: While Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill have made most of the noise, let us give equal credit to a batter who has never let his guard down. From scoring over 500 runs in the 2023 World Cup, despite having missed a major chunk of cricket the last year, it's almost as if Shreyas Iyer never left. Virat Kohli's special mention of him after winning the Player of the Match award against Pakistan tells the story. Solving the No. 4 has always been a conundrum for the BCCI and Team India, but the search seems to have ended with Iyer batting in the manner that he is.
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: A word for Shubman Gill
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: Shubman Gill has started 2025 the same way he did 2023 - by scoring tons and tons of runs. His last five scores have been 87 vs England, 60 vs England, 112 against England, 101 not out against Bangladesh and 46 against Pakistan. His knock against Pakistan last Sunday may have dwarfed his previous few scores, but it was as breathless as it could have been. His hammering of Pakistan pacer Shaheen Afridi was a sight to behold. He cut, straight-drove, and pulled him with disdain, never allowing Shaheen to regain his confidence. India need him to do this for at least two out of the next three games.
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: What could India's Playing XI look like today
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: With Rohit Sharma pretty much fit, expect no changes in India's batting order, with the captain, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer and others. The one tinkering India may not mind is giving Rishabh Pant a game. Pant has fallen behind in the pecking order to KL Rahul, who has become the team's designated wicketkeeper. As Rahul himself pointed out, it's been tough on the management and Pant himself, sitting out. Hence, today might be a fair chance to ensure Pant’s confidence is not dented.
India vs New Zealand Live Score, Champions Trophy 2025: Mohammed Shami's status for this match
India vs New Zealand LIVE Score, Champions Trophy 2025: Former England pacer Darren Gough, in an interview with The Hindustan Times, mentioned how the Indian team should give Mohammed Shami a break. The India pacer has hit the ground running, returning a six-wicket haul against Bangladesh. He seemed to be slightly uncomfortable with his leg during the Pakistan tie but returned to bowl his overs. With a semi-final and potentially final to be played, it may not be the worst idea to give Shami a breather for today's game and try out Arshdeep Singh.
