India vs New Zealand 2nd ODI highlights: IND thrash NZ by 8 wickets, seal series win

“I forgot what we wanted to do, had plenty of discussions with the team about the toss decision, just wanted to challenge ourselves under difficult conditions, but we'll bowl first. Was a good test for us, knowing that the wicket will get better to bat on and that was the challenge in front of us. Bracewell batted well, but we bowled well in the end and won the game. There was a bit of dew during the practice sessions, but we've heard from the curator that it will not play a role on game days. We batted first in Hyderabad, we wanted to bowl first here, same team."

Rohit Sharma needed to think for about 15 seconds after the coin fell his way before telling Tom Latham what they India are going to do, drawing laughter from the Kiwi captain, match referee Javagal Srinath, Ravi Shastri who was presenting the toss and the Indian players who stopped their practice to look at just what in the world their captain was doing. In the end, he finally told Latham that he will bowl first, ending the little comedy skit.

We are seconds away from the toss now. Rohit Sharma and Tom Latham are slowly making their way into the middle. 

There was no hat-trick of centuries for the former India captain as he, like most other Indian players failed to fire in the first ODI. He fell to a brilliant delivery from Mitchell Santner, can he negate that problematic left-arm spin today?

No rain is expected during the game with moderate temperatures set to welcome both sides. The surface will carry a bit of mystery given the venue hasn't hosted international cricket yet.

India had suffered in the middle overs in the opening ODI game and hence someone like Umran Malik could be looked at to tackle the issue. But that would imply that India would lose on their batting depth as Shardul Thakur would have to make way for the youngster. 

“To be honest, the way Bracewell was batting, we knew it was going to be a challenge. It was such clean striking. After we had them five down, we knew we were in the game unless we slip up. And that's what happened. But we always knew the threat of bowling under lights and with the dew like I said at the toss, which is the kind of challenge we wanted”

After winning the toss, openers got India off to a good start, with Rohit and Gill scoring a 6-run stand before the youngster single-handedly carried the team with his double century which helped the hosts set a 350-run target. The bowlers sent reduced New Zealand to 131 for 6 before Bracewell shattered their plans and threatened to pull off a masterclass of a chase with his 140-run knock. He was eventually stopped in the final over with an impressive yorker from Shardul as India won by 12 runs.

The Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium of Raiour is all set to stage its first ever international game. So far, it has hosted only one match before - a Ranji Trophy match between Chhattisgarh and Goa. Raipur is also likely to host one of the women's IPL matches in March.
