India vs Sri Lanka, 2nd Test, Day 1 Highlights: Bumrah, Shami reduce SL to 86/6 after India score 252

Dickwella takes a single off the third ball of the over after which Embuldeniya sees the rest of it off. As many as 16 wickets have fallen on Day 1. 

Dickwella is on 13 off 29 while Embuldeniya is on none off eight. Sri Lanka are 86/6 at Stumps, trail India (252) by 166 runs in Bengaluru

Bumrah ends that over with a slow delivery that hits Embuldeniya full on the pads. The Indians go up in an appeal but the umpire shakes his head. India decide not to take the review, which is strange because the replays later showed that the batter was as plumb out as it can get. 

GONE! Bumrah takes the one wicket that India would have wanted today before stumps. Mathews pokes a slow delivery that comes short of a length and sits up on him. The ball sails to second slip. 

Mathews walks for a well made 43 off 85, Sri Lanka are 85/6 in 28.1 overs

About five overs left for the day and Rohit Sharma has brought in Jasprit Bumrah. Faint echoes of a Mumbai Indians game in the IPL here when Bumrah would be one of the bowlers that Rohit would call upon to restrict the opposition team but this is an entirely different format. Would be an interesting end to the day's play. 

Just as the commentators were pointing out that he was the spinner who has got the last turn from the pitch, Ashwin makes one rip from the middle and go past Dickwella's shoulder. 

SIX! The former Sri Lanka captain goes down on his knees and swings the bat through the ball off Axar. That has been sent over the bowler's head and into the stands. Lovely strike and he moves to 31 off 64.  

He is bowling to Dickwella and the first two deliveries go for no runs. Dickwella then sweeps through square leg for a four!

He plays for the spin but Axar doesn't do that. The ball takes his inside edge and bounces just behind the off stump. They have reached 53 which means that their deficit has come down to 199. As former captain Russell Arnold said wryly in the commentary box, “they can now force India to bat again” as they have avoided the follow-on. 

OUT! Asalanka trying to take on Axar and failing spectacularly. He jumps down the wicket, looking to deposit this over midwicket but the ball didn't spin enough and he only ends up sending it high into the Bengaluru night sky. Ashwin settles underneath it and takes the catch safely. Sri Lanka have lost half their batting order within the first 19 overs.

SIX! Mathews goes aerial over the bowler's head after the previous delivery spat up on him. A single off the next ball brings up Sri Lanka's 50

FOUR! Full and straight from Shami and Mathews sends it straight back down the pitch with a gorgeus straight drive. The ball races to the boundary. 

GONE! Big shouts of LBW against Dhananjaya but the umpire shakes his head. Both Pant and the bowler Shami tells Rohit that this is worth checking and as it turns out, it is three reds and the decision has to be overturned. Shami gets his second wicket and Dhananjaya has to walk for 10 runs off 24 balls

Sri Lanka are 28/4 in 11.5 overs

FOUR! Dhananjaya de Silva opens the face of the bat and sends this delivery from Shami past the slip cordon for four. That is the first boundary of the innings for Sri Lanka and it has come after 11 overs have gone by. SL 23/3 off 11.2 overs.  

The 10th over, which was bowled by Bumrah, was a maiden and now Ravindra Jadeja has taken the ball in his hands. He had taken five wickets in the first innings of the first Test, how many does he fancy here. SL 20/3 after 10 overs. 

The former Sri Lanka captain drives through covers and collects two runs to get off the mark. Sri Lanka 20/3 after 9 overs. 

Bumrah with a snorter to start off the ninth over that kicks off from good length and crashes onto Mathews's forearm. Mathews has faced 12 balls so far and is yet to get off the mark but Sri Lanka won't mind that one bit. They need these two to stay in the middle as long as possible. 

Sri Lanka may just have to be content with trying to stay alive in every over and forget about runs here as the Chinnaswamy has become a real cauldron. A big shout for LBW came off the second ball of that over against Dhananjaya but the umpire shook his head. Rohit took the review and replays showed that the ball had taken his inside edge. 

He castles the Sri Lankan skipper. The visitors have got off to a nightmarish start here. Length ball around off from Shami, it nips in to breach Karunaratne's defence and smashes onto the stumps. 

Karunaratne is dismissed for 4 off 13, SL are 14/3 in 5.1 overs. 

Length ball outside off to Thirimanne who takes a poke at it. Once again the ball takes the outside edge and goes to Iyer at third slip. Well this pitch was supposed to be turning square but Bumrah has done the early damage here. 

Thirimanne dismissed for 8 off 6 balls. 

Sri Lanka 14/2 off 4.1 overs

Thirimanne hit a couple of fours off Bumrah's fourth and fifth balls after which Karunaratne struck a boundary off the last ball of the fourth over of the innings bowled by Ashwin. 

Mendis has to go after scoring 2 runs off 7 balls. Full delivery outside off that moves away from Mendis who is trapped with absolutely no foot movement. He edges it into the hands of Shreyas Iyer's hands at third slip. 

SL 2/1 in 2.1 overs

Well India have decided to start with spin at one end, and why not. Ravichandran Ashwin has taken the ball in his hands and Karunaratne is the man facing up. 

Mendis took two runs to get off the mark off the fifth ball of the over. The next one, however, was pitched around off at good length and it whistled past Mendis's outside edge. 

Kusal Mendis is facing up against Jasprit Bumrah with captain Dimuth Karunaratne at the other end. The lights are beaming down at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. 

The Indian fielders are out and they seem to be in a jolly mood. Kohli laughing and joking around with his team mates. The Sri Lankan batters are yet to walk.
