On Monday, North Zone had almost booked their ticket to Hyderabad for the Duleep Trophy semifinal against Central Zone after taking the first-innings lead.
And on Tuesday, they sealed it by setting an improbable victory target of 528 for the West Zone to achieve in the few remaining overs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Though Kamlesh Makvana did his bit to stop the flow of runs, taking his second five-wicket haul in the match, the off-spinner could not stop North from scoring at a fast clip and declaring the innings at 208 for seven.
With a mammoth target of 528, West played out the remaining overs to close at 69 for two.
When Makvana dismissed Rahul Dewan (45) for the first breakthrough on the final day, there was hardly any jubilation in the West Zone camp.
With national selectors Sandeep Patil and Vikram Rathour keeping a close watch on the proceedings, Shikhar Dhawan (50) had every reason to score big, like in the first innings when he scored slammed a ton. But soon after reaching his half-century, he was stumped, stepping out to Makvana.
Sunny Singh (28) too was stumped after a Harmeet Singh delivery kept embarrassingly low.
