PCB gets a sponsor for T20 tri-series
After weeks of effort, the Pakistan Cricket Board has finally managed to rope in sponsors for a Twenty20 tri-series against West Indies and Bangladesh in Canada from August 13 to 16.
Toronto has not hosted any international cricket since 1999 when Pakistan last played West Indies there although it became a regular venue for the Sahara Cup involving Pakistan and India between 1996 and 98 before the Kargil dispute disrupted the calendar.
A PCB official said that the Twenty20 tournament was being organised to exploit the growing popularity of the new form of the game particularly since it was the best way to woo fans in North America.
"Plus we needed to give our team maximum exposure before the Champions Trophy in September," he said.
However, the fact that the PCB, the local organisers and the West Indies Cricket Board found it difficult to rope in sponsors for a four-day event has come as a surprise since big money is coming into the sport because of twenty20 cricket.
