Born on December 29, 1960, in Launceston, Tasmania, the compact right-handed batter possessed a stocky frame that belied exceptional footwork and rapid reflexes. Emerging as a core figure during a rebuilding era under Allan Border, Boon became the quintessential tough Australian top-order anchor, combining relentless concentration with an ironclad defense and a devastating square cut.

Boon's signature peak arrived during the 1987 ICC Cricket World Cup in India and Pakistan, where his consistency at the top of the order proved instrumental in securing Australia's inaugural World Cup victory. Amassing 447 runs across the tournament, his defining moment came in the final against England at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Opening the batting, Boon anchored the innings with a patient, tactical 75 off 125 balls, earning Player of the Match honors as Australia clinched a thrilling seven-run victory.
