James Anderson

Age 44EnglandENGLAND
Right-arm fast medium Bowler

A master of physical mechanics, aerodynamic manipulation, and relentless spatial precision, Sir James Anderson stands as the most prolific fast bowler in Test cricket history. Born in Burnley, Lancashire, the right-arm fast-medium bowler engineered an iconic delivery stride characterized by a low-head posture at release, smooth kinetic transfer through the hips, and an exceptionally flexible wrist axis. This biomechanical setup permitted micro-adjustments to the seam position, allowing him to generate late conventional swing in humid conditions and sharp seam movement off hard surfaces without sacrificing control over his lengths.

Anderson made his international debut in December 2002 during a One-Day International against Australia in Melbourne, followed by his Test cap against Zimbabwe at Lord's in May 2003, where he claimed five wickets in his debut innings. Across a remarkable 22-year Test career spanning 188 matches until his retirement in July 2024, Anderson bowled 40,037 deliveries, claiming 704 wickets at an average of 26.45 with 32 five-wicket hauls. He became the first pace bowler in history to surpass both 600 and 700 Test wickets, operating with an economy rate of 2.79 through exceptional landing-zone repetition.

In 194 ODIs between 2002 and 2015, he captured a further 269 wickets at an average of 29.22, which included a feat of becoming the first English bowler to take a hat-trick in ODIs. His elite standing was reflected in the official ICC rankings, where he scaled the summit to become the number one ranked Test bowler in six separate spells between 2016 and 2023. In February 2023, at the age of 40 years and 207 days, he reclaimed the world number one spot, becoming the oldest bowler to achieve the top ranking since 1936.

Rather than stepping away from active play after his international career concluded, Anderson has continued to operate with relentless competitive vigour. Driven by an enduring physical obsession with the craft of bowling, he extended his playing career with Lancashire, taking on the County Championship captaincy and returning to white-ball cricket. His long-term physical conditioning, refined workload management, and pure technical enthusiasm have allowed him to maintain high-level seam accuracy and ball control long past traditional athletic baselines.

Appointed an MBE in 2015 and knighted in 2025 for services to cricket, Anderson remains one of the game's ultimate technical blueprints for seam-bowling execution.
