Mitchell Johnson

Age 44AustraliaAUSTRALIA
Left-arm fast Bowler

Armed with a slinging left-arm action and frightening trajectory, Mitchell Johnson was one of the most destructive fast bowlers of his generation. Discovered as a teenager by Dennis Lillee, who declared him a once-in-a-generation talent, the Townsville-born paceman possessed the rare ability to shatter top orders with raw pace and steep bounce. His low release angle made his deliveries notoriously difficult to pick up, while his late swing and searing bouncers made him a nightmarish prospect on fast pitches. Though his early career suffered from wild inconsistency and technical wobbles, at his absolute peak, he wielded an utterly terrifying authority over world cricket.

Johnson's career was defined by dramatic swings between match-winning brilliance and deep self-doubt, demonstrating incredible personal fortitude to achieve lasting greatness. After struggling through severe directional issues that rendered him the target of relentless opposition sledging, he completely rebuilt his rhythm and mental approach. His ultimate redemption arrived during the iconic 2013-14 Ashes series, where he unleashed one of the most dominant fast-bowling displays in Test history. Snaring 37 wickets at an average of 13.97, his furious speed and relentless hostility dismantled the English side and spearheaded Australia's 5-0 whitewash victory.

Beyond his red-ball dominance, Johnson was a central engine for Australia across all formats and a two-time winner of the ICC Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for Cricketer of the Year. He played a vital role in Australia's 2015 ODI World Cup victory, taking key wickets in both the semi-final and final to lift the trophy on home soil. He was also a potent lower-order batter capable of changing games with aggressive hitting, highlighted by a blistering Test century against South Africa at Cape Town. On the field, his trademark handlebar moustache and intimidating glare masked a thoughtful, introspective character who transformed raw athletic gift into legendary fast-bowling art.

When he retired from international cricket in 2015, Johnson stood comfortably as one of Australia's premier strike bowlers of all time. Over 73 Test matches, he captured 313 wickets at an average of 28.40, including 12 five-wicket hauls and three 10-wicket match hauls. His One-Day International output was equally lethal, taking 239 wickets in 153 matches at an average of 25.26. Defined by hostile pace, emotional resilience, and unmatched peak impact, Johnson cemented an indelible legacy as a terrifying force of modern cricket.
