Mushtaq Ahmed

There was always more to Mushtaq Ahmed's bowling than the ball that turned. A wrist-spinner with a sharp googly, subtle changes of pace and plenty of attacking intent, Mushtaq learned to make batters second-guess what was coming next. His international journey began with an ODI against Sri Lanka in 1989, followed by his Test debut against Australia the following year.

The early years were not always smooth, but Mushtaq gradually became more assured with the ball. By the time Pakistan's campaign at the 1992 World Cup came around, he had developed into a bowler the team could turn to when they needed a breakthrough. He finished the tournament with 16 wickets and saved one of his finest performances for the final, taking three wickets as Pakistan lifted the trophy.

The confidence from that campaign carried into the next phase of his career. Mushtaq became increasingly influential in Test cricket, using his variations to attack rather than simply contain. His spell of 7 for 56 against New Zealand was the best example of that approach, but it was the consistency of his wicket-taking that really established him. He eventually finished with 185 Test wickets from 52 matches, alongside 161 wickets in 144 ODIs.

Away from Pakistan, Mushtaq found another stage on which his bowling could flourish. County cricket gave him the chance to spend long periods working with the ball, and Sussex became particularly important to the later part of his playing career. He thrived there, helping them win the County Championship in 2003, 2006 and 2007. His success in England showed that his skills were not dependent on subcontinental conditions.

By the time his playing career was winding down, Mushtaq had already begun looking towards what came next. His understanding of wrist-spin made coaching a natural progression. He held roles with England, Pakistan and the West Indies over the following decade, before taking up the spin-bowling coach position with Bangladesh in 2024.
