'Sachin made his debut before I was born and played in my debut': England legend's long, heartfelt tribute to Tendulkar
While there are a few players who are tipped to at least equal some of the records that Sachin Tendulkar holds, the England star has said that the Indian batting great's achievements will always be remarkable.
Sachin Tendulkar is the most prolific run scorer in the history of international cricket and most of his major records remain out of reach for contemporary batters. There are a few who have been touted to get close to them since the time the Indian great has retired, chief of which have been Alastair Cook, Joe Root, James Anderson and Virat Kohli.
It looked possible for Cook to surpass Tendulkar's career run tally in Tests until the former England captain retired from international cricket at the age of 33 in 2018. Veteran England fast bowler James Anderson, meanwhile, still has the slender chance of at least equalling Tendulkar's record for most career Test appearances. Tendulkar is the only player to have played 200 Tests while Anderson has played 177. Former India captain Virat Kohli, meanwhile, is certainly in with a chance of surpassing Tendulkar's tally of ODI centuries - Kohli scored his 45th ODI ton on Tuesday while Tendulkar had scored 49. Kohli could also equal Tendulkar's record of 100 international centuries if he keeps going at his current rate for a few more years.
Joe Root, who replaced Cook as England's Test captain, meanwhile, is also tipped also tipped as someone who could surpass Test tally of 15,921 runs considering his spellbinding form over the past two years in the longest format. However, Root has stated that what Tendulkar has achieved will always be remarkable, regardless of whether someone manages to surpass those records or not.
“I mean obviously there are some wonderful players currently playing but look at what Sachin has achieved, it’s just remarkable really, the longevity, the ability to be such a high-performing player at such a young age, and then to be able to sustain and to keep developing and moving forward in the game," Root told Zee ahead of the first clash of the inaugural ILT20 between Dubai Capitals and Abu Dhabi Knight Riders.
“There have been times when he's carried the weight of the pressure on his shoulders, and he did it for over 20 years. He made his debut before I was born and played in my debut, and it just shows how and what he was for Indian cricket for such a long period of time. Truly great at the game, someone that you know, along with many others that I was admiring as a kid, how easy it looked, and not only has he contributed to Indian cricket but also to world cricket. So yeah, definitely a standout for me as a kid growing,” said Root.
