'Why not get him in the game early?': Ex-India bowler questions Shikhar Dhawan's tactics in 2nd ODI vs West Indies

India may have sealed a series win but their bowlers have taken a hiding in both the matches played thus far.

Both matches that India and the West Indies have played in their three-match ODI series have turned out to be run feasts. It has also meant that bowlers on both sides have often taken a hiding and India will be hoping that they keep the West Indies batters down in the third and final ODI as they attempt to do a cleansweep on them.

Former India fast bowler Ajit Agarkar feels that visiting captain Shikhar Dhawan could have brought on spinner Yuzvendra Chahal earlier in the second ODI, in which the West Indies scored 311/6. Chahal was brought on only in the 17th over of the match. He bowled nine overs, picking one wicket and conceding 69 runs.

"I don't quite know what is the plan regarding holding Chahal back. He has done really well whenever he has bowled. Today you could see that when there are explosive hitters in the end, maybe he was a little bit greedy trying to pick wickets towards the end of the innings," Agarkar said on Fancode.

The 44-year-old said that bringing Chahal early would allow him to have a go at batters when they are not set. "It's not always easy, doesn't matter how good a bowler you are, once there are set batters at the crease, once there is a little bit of license, these guys have a lot of power. So why not get him in the game early and try and pick up wickets up front," he added.

India won the second ODI by two wickets with just two balls in hand, thus taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series, which is being played entire in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. A win on Wednesday will give India their first-ever cleansweep against the West Indies in an ODI series comprising of three or more matches.
