Chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat on Friday granted ₹3 crore for conservation of dying Naini Lake in Nainital.

The chief minister was in the town for opening of a three-day Modi festival.

“The conservation of the worldwide famous Naini Lake is our top priority. I have been coming to here for 30 years. This lake is not only a significant entity for people of Uttarakhand, but for world as well,” he told the media.

He said the state government would make “all possible efforts” to restore the sanctity of the Lake. “If needed, we will seek help of the central government.”

The level of lake this year has drastically gone down to minus seven feet which became a major national concern.

A barefoot walk by thousands of local residents was held on June 3 from Gandhi statue to Pant statue on the Mall Road to highlight the dying condition of the lake.

Meetings at different levels are being carried out regarding the water level of the Naini Lake. The high court is also serious regarding the dropping of the lake water level.

The chief minister met environment experts and discussed reasons behind depletion in water level.

Experts were asked to survey and submit a report on reviving the lake and it further conservation.

Talking about the hyped NH74 scam, Rawat said the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) would process the case in next three months.

The government has already suspended 6 officers and arrested them in connection with the case.

He said commissioner D Senthil Pandiyan, who was replaced few days back, has completed his investigation and has submitted a detailed report to the state government.

Giving opportunity to farmers for discussing their problem, he said special assistance would be provided to them. He will also talk to them directly every week to strengthen farming and agricultural practices in hills.
