The state industries department has submitted a report to the government suggesting that the tourism sector in Uttarakhand, can be given the status of an industry, a top official said on Sunday.

A proposal to give industry status to tourism in the state, was mooted in 2004 too, but it was not implemented, said state tourism secretary Dileep Jawalkar.

A move to grant industry status to tourism is being considered by the department and the proposal has been submitted to the government for approval, he said.

It is an important sector as Uttarakhand is projected as a tourism state across the whole world. The Chardham yatra attracts more than 2 crore pilgrims every year to the state.

If tourism is accorded the status of an industry, it will help the sector in the state , said SC Nautiyal, director of state industries department.

“The biggest benefit will be in electricity tariff,” he said.

At present there are three categories of electricity tariff is in the state, including domestic, commercial and industrial, Nautiyal said.

“If tourism is given the status of an industry, then hotels, lodges, resorts and other tourism infrastructure will be eligible for the industrial rates that will give a boost to the industry as the rates are lesser than the commercial rates.”

At present, hotels in the hill regions have been given the status of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME), but hotels in the plains have not included, he said.

“After giving industry status to tourism, it will become applicable to all hotels and resorts across the state and tourism on the whole will benefit from the MSME policy.”

Nautiyal, however, said entrepreneurs in the sector will not get any added benefits like getting land or bank loans.

The main advantage, however, will be that concessions given to the industries will become applicable on the tourism related units, helping them to maximize their profits, he said.
