The northeast Delhi Lok Sabha candidate of the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP), Dilip Pandey, on Wednesday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting for his intervention in ending the ongoing guest teachers’ agitation in Delhi.
Hundreds of guest teachers have been protesting since March 1 demanding regularisation of jobs, after their contracts expired on February 28. The Delhi Cabinet had passed a policy to allow them to work till the age of 60.
Pandey urged the Prime Minister to direct the Lieutenant Governor (L-G) of Delhi Anil Baijal to pass the Cabinet’s decision on regularisation of jobs of around 22,000 guest teachers working in city’s government schools.
“As it’s in your knowledge that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was stripped off its the control over the services department that deals with transfer and postings of officers in the Delhi government. We have been fighting for it legally for over four years now. And, till the court gives its decision in the matters, the services department is with the Centre,” the letter stated.
Pandey said that the AAP government could not regularise the jobs of guest teachers without the L-G’s approval. “In the last four years, the Delhi government has sent two proposals on regularisation of the jobs of guest teachers to the L-G. The government had even called a special assembly session and passed a policy on guest teachers’ regularisation and sent it to the L-G for approval. We are still waiting for his response,” he said.
