Aam Aadmi Party candidate Ram Chandra filed his nomination on Wednesday for the Bawana assembly bypoll on August 23.
The bypoll was required after AAP MLA from Bawana, Ved Parkash, quit the Delhi assembly to join the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the municipal elections this year. Parkash is now contesting on the BJP ticket.
“The AAP government started several development projects in the area over the past two and half years. I promise that all these projects will be completed. People know about it and I have the confidence that voters will back the AAP,” Ram Chandra said.
Top party leaders, including AAP (Delhi) convener Gopal Rai, minister Imran Hussain, senior leader Sanjay Singh and a party legislators such as Saurabh Bhardwaj, Ajesh Yadav, Sharad Chauhan and Bandana Kumari accompanied the party candidate while filing nomination.
Ram Chandra had been associated with India Against Corruption -the anti-corruption movement from which AAP was born.
Chandra, a migrant from Purvanchal (eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar), has been politically active in the area for the past several years. He had contested an election on BSP ticket in 2008 from Bawana - one of the 12 reserved constituencies for Scheduled Castes in the 70-member Delhi assembly.
Congress candidate Surender Kumar also filed his nomination on Tuesday. He was accompanied by Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken. Soon after the nomination, Maken said the Congress candidate, three time MLA from the constituency, has worked with honesty, dedication and commitment in the area. “He is a staunch follower of the ideology and policies of the Congress party, and has spread the message of the party with total commitment,” he said.
BJP candidate Ved Prakash is likely to file his papers on August 5.
The bypoll is politically ‘critical’ for the AAP as it comes after back to back electoral losses for the party in Rajouri assembly bypoll and the MCD elections. The AAP has putting in rigorous efforts with the AAP (Delhi) convener and labour minister, Gopal Rai, camping in the constituency for over a month.
