Police have arrested three men, who had shot at a collection agent in south Delhi’s Hauz Khas earlier this month during a robbery attempt.

Senior officers said, the police zeroed in on the accused after the victim told the investigating officers that the main accused, before shooting at him, had come close and said “Hi, How are you?” The victim identified the voice as one of his former colleagues’ and tipped off the police after which they were arrested.

The three accused have been identified as Dheeraj Yadav (40), who already has two criminal cases registered against him, and Jai Prakash (36) and Ajay Tawar (39) — both drivers by profession. According to the police, it was on July 4, when the victim, Sajjan Kumar, visited his office in Jungpura and collected cash to deposit it in a bank in Hauz Khas.

Deputy commissioner of police (south), Romil Baaniya said “While probing the case, victim’s statement was recorded while he was under treatment, in which he mentioned that one of the accused greeted him by shaking hands. The victim could identify the voice and suspected him to be one Dheeraj Yadav, his former colleague. On this, Yadav’s Delhi house was raided but he was found absconding. On Sunday, following a tip off, Yadav was arrested from Filmistan in New Delhi. During interrogation, Yadav disclosed the names of other co-accused as Jai Prakash and Ajay Tawar. They were arrested on his instance.” Deputy commissioner of police (south), Romil Baaniya said.

Police said that Sajjan used to follow the same route from Jungpura to Hauz Khas whenever he had to deposit cash.

“On July 4, two masked men started following him on a bike. The men also tried to stop Kumar and intercept him near Moolchand flyover, but Kumar did not stop. The moment Kumar reached the bank and was parking his bike, the two men approached him and one of them greeted him and shook hands with him. The duo then suddenly started snatching his cash bag and when he resisted, he was shot at thrice,” the DCP said.
