A 32-year-old woman was found dead in a trunk inside her house in north Delhi’s Roop Nagar on Tuesday, said police. They added that the main suspect in the murder, the woman’s husband, was missing.

Police identified the woman as Nirmala and her husband as 35-year-old Santosh Kumar, a labourer, and they lived at Ghanta Ghar.

According to the police, they received a call around 4 pm from a man who said that the woman, who was his tenant, had been found dead .

When a police team reached the spot, they found that the body had started decomposing and had been stuffed into the trunk. The trunk had been covered with a bed sheet and a plastic sheet supposedly to prevent the odour from spreading.

“The woman lived in a one-room set flat,” said a police officer not authorised to speak to the media. “Her landlord told police that the woman’s neighbours reported foul smell from the house. When the landlord arrived at the house to check, no one responded to his calls and that the house was locked from outside. The landlord unlocked the house and found the source of the odour in the trunk.”

Primary inquiry revealed that the woman’s husband had not been seen in the area for the last two days. A crime and forensics team was rushed to the spot to collect samples. A case was registered at the Subzi Mandi police station.

Deputy commissioner of police (north) Nupur Prasad said that prima facie the woman was strangled to death.

“We have sent the body for an autopsy. Neighbours have not reported anything suspicious. So far, the woman’s husband, who is absconding, is the prime suspect and efforts to trace him are underway. His workplace in Kamla Nagar has also been contacted to get more details of his whereabouts.”

Police found that the couple belonged to Bihar. They had no children. It was also found that the landlord did not get tenant’s verification done while renting the room to the couple, the police said.
