NEW DELHI: Delhi is the most unsafe city for children in the country, a report by National Crime Records Bureau said. It also said that children are most vulnerable to crimes like murder, foeticide, rape, unnatural sex and trafficking in the national capital.

One child is murdered per lakh population in Delhi, third highest among union territories, and more than any other state, shows NCRB data. When it comes to infanticide, the rate of crime is 0.1, same as Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan, the NCRB report said.

“It is a well-known fact that Delhi is the most unsafe place for women as most cases of rape are registered here,” said Rishi Kant, an activist with Shakti Vahini NGO.

“Cases of unnatural sex and human trafficking are also the highest in Delhi. The city witnessed 112 cases of unnatural sex and 57 cases of human trafficking with rate of crime being 2 and 1 per lakh population, respectively. The next highest was Kerala with 1.5 rate of crime under section 377 (unnatural sex) and Chandigarh with 0.5 rate of crime under the trafficking section,” Kant said.

NGOs feel that the human trafficking data in the NCRB report does not reflect the full picture. ”The data says only 87 cases of human trafficking were registered in Delhi in 2015. This is not possible. There have been cases where arrested traffickers have claimed of pushing over 5,000 minors into forced labour,” said an activist.

Over 6,800 children went missing in 2015. In the document submitted in the Lok Sabha, it has been revealed that of the total children who have gone missing in past three years from Delhi, 9,001 have not been found. Every year about 1,500 more children added to the list of those missing, an activist said.
