Interested in learning new language? Apply to DU

NEW DELHI: For students interested in learning a new language, Delhi University is the place to be. DU offers Bachelor of (Hons) in French, German, Italian and Spanish.

DU is the only university in India offering BA (Hons) in Italian. There are 39 seats in each of the courses that are offered by the Department of Germanic and Romance Studies. Interested students can apply to these courses through the DU centralised form. The last date of application is June 19.

“Even if a student has not studied any of the language they can apply for the course. The student will just face a disadvantage of 5%,” said Minni Sawhney, teacher at the Department of Germanic and Romance Studies.

Like all other courses, admission to the language courses will take place on the basis of merit and the cut off released by the department. The cutoff for these courses is usually between 80-85%. However, for Italian (Hons) the cutoff is slightly lower.

The students can pursue the course further as the department offers Masters, MPhil and PhD in these languages. There are also part-time courses in Portuguese and Romanian. Similarly, the Department of Slavonic and FinnoUgrian Studies offers part-time courses in Hungarian, Czech, Croatian, Bulgarian.

Other DU colleges also offer foreign language courses. At Hansraj College, students can pursue certificate, diploma and advanced diploma courses in French and German. Other colleges that offer certificate courses in foreign languages are Miranda House, St Stephen’s, Ramjas, SGTB Khalsa, Daulat Ram and Sri Venkateswara.

Total number of registrations in DU till 6pm on Thursday were 3,03,879 of which 1,84,810 have already paid the fee.
