L-G to extend tenure of scrutiny committee

NEW DELHI: Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung is likely to extend the tenure of a three-member committee that he constituted to examine ‘ irregularities’ and infirmities’ in the files of the Delhi government that were submitted to his office. The committee had been formed after an August 4 order of Delhi High Court that ruled the L-G as the administrative head of the capital.

The L-G had requested the committee to submit its interim reports and recommendations pertaining to the 400 files received by his office from time to time and to submit the final report within six weeks of the first meeting.

The committee had started working soon after.

Though the Arvind Kejriwal government had sent about 400 files for ex-post facto approval of the L-G following the August 4 court order, the AAP leadership has expressed reservations over the scrutiny exercise alleging that it was affecting governance.

Last month, deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia had written independently to the three-members of the committee, requesting them not to scrutinize the files as the Delhi government had challenged the Delhi High Court order in the Supreme Court. The committee, sources in the L-G’s office said, however continues to work on its mandate.

Some of the major decisions taken by the L-G after the committee started working include cancellation of appointment of DERC chairman, dissolution of Delhi Wakf Board, cancellation of notification to increase circle rate of farm land and cancellation recommendation to revise minimum wages.
