Man caught dumping woman’s body in pit, says she killed herself

NEW DELHI: A 29-year-old man was arrested while trying to bury the body of his 19-year-old sister-in-law, in a pit he dug in southeast Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh area.

NEW DELHI: A 29-year-old man was arrested while trying to bury the body of his 19-year-old sister-in-law, in a pit he dug in southeast Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh area. The man was reportedly seen by the locals, who informed the police control room after which he was caught red-handed.

Shankar told the police that his sister-in-law, Shridevi, committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan at their residence and he was going to bury her body as he did not want police to visit his house. He told the police that his building contractor told him to bury the body and not involve police, as his building was unauthorised and would be sealed if the police found out.

According to the police, Shridevi, hailing from Bareilly, was living with her sister and brother-in-law. The family said she was upset because of some of her friends ignoring her.

After she allegedly committed suicide, Shankar put her body in a sack that he then covered with a plastic bag. He then loaded it on a rickshaw and took it to a secluded place. He dug up a pit and was putting the body in it when locals saw him and made a PCR call.

“While the family claims that she killed herself because she was depressed, we have initiated an inquiry into the matter,” a senior police officer said.

The investigators for now have registered a case under sections 297 IPC (disrespect to body) and have arrested him. Further investigation in the case is on. Police said more sections will be added once the autopsy report is out and the exact cause of death is ascertained.
