The arrested man, identified as Aslam, was arrested from Anand Parbat area with the help of a member of “slum panchayat”, an initiative of the central Delhi Police for community policing.
On June 5, Aslam along with his four friends had allegedly killed one Rohit Singh, a youth from the former’s village who was in a relationship with his sister. Despite repeated warnings, Singh had remained in touch with his sister. Enraged, Aslam murdered him, fled his village and came to Delhi looking for a safe hideout, police said.
Devesh Chandra Srivastava, additional CP (central), said Aslam’s arrest came after a member of the slum panchayat informed the local police that a youth was seen moving around in the area under suspicious circumstances and was in search of a job and shelter.
“Aslam had scratches all over his body and the member suspected that he was involved in some criminal activity. A police team picked him up for questioning, during which he tried to misguide us, saying he got the scratches while swimming. But on sustained interrogation, he broke down and disclosed that he was involved in a murder case,” said Srivastava.
