Police sources blamed a short circuit in the air conditioner for the fire.
Also on Thursday, twelve boys on Thursday attempted fleeing police custody by setting on fire a jail van, but accompanying cops acted in time and thwarted their ingenious attempt.
Police sources said the juveniles, inmates of a Mukherjee Nagar shelter, were carrying a matchbox. They set seats of the van on fire. “They did it to escape, but alert policemen soon informed the fire department. The fire was brought under control and the boys were then taken to the juvenile home in the same van,” a police officer said.
“The incident occurred at 4pm near Civil Lines. The constables posted with the van immediately made the PCR call,” the officer added. Two head constables and three constables were in the van.
