An 87-year-old woman was found strangled to death at her three-storey residence in northwest Delhi’s Mahendra Park area on Wednesday morning.
According to the victim’s family, the octogenarian was murdered for her earrings, some clothes and an old DVD Player — goods approximately amounting to R2,000.

“She has been identified as Maya Devi. The incident came to light around 4.30am when her grandson Arvind Kochar (35), woke-up to go to the New Delhi Railway Station to receive his father,” said a senior Delhi Police officer from the investigation team.

The house is located less than a hundred metres away from the local police beat box.

According to police, when Arvind awoke around 4.30 am and tried to get out of his room, which happens to be next to the room in which his grandmother was sleeping, he realised that it had been bolted from outside.

“He then used a window adjacent to the staircase to climb out and went to check on Maya Devi, only to see her lying limp on her bed in the centre of the ransacked room. Her limbs had been bound with two chunnis and another one had been tied tightly around her neck,” the officer said.

“While the six-member family that consists of his wife, Rachna, a seven-year-old son and a two-year-old daughter stays on the first floor, the Kochars have rented out the ground and the second floor to about 13 tenants who pay rent ranging from R1,100 to R1,500. Apart from this, Arvind owns a general store adjacent to his residence,” said the officer.

The assailants seemed to have made their entry through a kitchen window located behind the octogenarian’s room and killed her when they failed to find valuables, said police. “We have registered a case at the Rani Bagh police station and are investigating the matter from all angles since the value of missing items is very less,” said NS Bundela, DCP (northwest).
