This will help ease traffic at the city’s three existing mega-stations — New Delhi, Old Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin.

Three new east-bound mail/express trains will ply from Anand Vihar. Soon, a majority of trains that operate out of New and Old Delhi will be shifted.

“It will decongest road traffic between Delhi and the trans-Yamuna area as passengers will be able to board trains from Anand Vihar instead of having to travel by road to the other stations,” said Northern Railway spokesman Anant Swaroop.

The 600 sq m terminal took six years to build and cost Rs 85 crore.

It has three platforms, foreign exchange counters and ATMs.

To reduce platform crowd, routine duties such as loading of food and linen, and pasting of reservation charts will be done in a maintenance area before the train rolls into the platform.

A notable addition will be luggage trolleys, as at airports.
