Singh was apprised of the developments by Congress MP Rajeev Shukla, who is also the BCCI Vice-President, at a meeting here which came close on the heels of the opposition in Lok Sabha demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the functioning of the Indian Premier League.

The meeting came a day after Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor was forced to quit following allegations that he misused his position to procure a Rs 70 crore stake in the Kochi IPL team for his close friend Sunanda Pushkar.

The IPL issue figured in the Lok Sabha with leaders from different parties demanding a ban on the tournament, its takeover by the government and a thorough investigation into alleged "betting" and "laundering of black money".

Amid the opposition din, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee held out the assurance that "no guilty or wrong-doer" would be spared. He said investigation into the sources and routes of funding for the Twenty20 tournament had already begun.

Congress sources said the party has not given credence to speculation about links of two Union Ministers with the IPL.

The party was, however, of the view that the continuance of Lalit Modi as IPL Commissioner appears to be uncertain. "He will have to leave and there is no other option," said a party insider.

The sources claimed that though NCP chief and former BCCI President Sharad Pawar is a known supporter of Modi, he will not hesitate to take action if any wrong-doing was proved against him.

Leader of the opposition Arun Jaitley, who is also in the Governing Council of BCCI, has been critical of the IPL Commissioner, they said.
