Apex court verdict on Kudankulam plant today

On Monday, the Supreme Court would pronounce its verdict on a petition that seeks to stay the commissioning of Kudankulam nuclear plant in Tamil Nadu. A batch of petitions filed by anti-nuclear activists challenging the project also wants scrapping of the plant.

A bench of Justice KS Radhakrishnan and Justice Dipak Misra had reserved the verdict following lengthy arguments in which the government stated the plant was completely safe and could withstand any kind of natural disaster.

The batch of petitions challenging the project claimed the government had failed to implement the safety measures recommended by an expert body. These measures had to be put in place before the plant was made operational.

Questions were also raised pertaining to the disposal of nuclear waste, the plant's impact on the environment and the safety of people living nearby. The Centre, Tamil Nadu Government and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited had refuted all the allegations on safety and security aspects.
