Together with Bharat Jhamb, they allegedly kidnapped Jhamb’s 15-year-old cousin Arjun Verma and asked for a ransom of Rs 80 lakh.

Jain, who was pursuing an MBA course through correspondence from Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabad, was into share trading and had incurred huge losses in the stock market due to the global meltdown.

Chopra, an MBA student of Indira Gandhi National Open University, had a property dealing business and also suffered losses. “They were desperate for cash as they had collected huge sums from the market to invest in their respective businesses and incurred losses,” said a senior police officer.

Ironically, both the accused belong to affluent families. The police said Jain’s father Parveen Kumar Jain is into graphic designing and has an office in Karol Bagh. Chopra’s father Yogesh Chopra is a general manager in a five-star hotel in Delhi.

Police said to get logistical support they had even hired a professional criminal Dalip Singh Rathore.
