Strong chilly winds kept the temperatures below normal on the first day of the new year. The maximum temperature recorded during the daytime was 16.7 degree Celsius, which was 5 degrees below normal for this time of the year.

The minimum temperature was 8.9 degree Celsius, which was one degree above normal for this time of the year.

"The northerly winds from the snow-bound Himalayan regions have resulted in the chill and the minimum temperature in Delhi could go down to as low as 4 degrees Celsius in the next 48 hours. Other states of north India, such as Punjab and Rajasthan, are also experiencing similar conditions," said BP Yadav, director, weather forecast, Met department.

The strong winds, which lashed the city at 15 to 20 km/hr throughout the day on Saturday, are expected to continue for the next few days.

"The strong winds will not allow the fog to settle and hence there will be no dense fog but there is a possibility of shallow fog remains," added Yadav.
