The Centre has allocated Rs1,257.86 crore as central planned assistance to Delhi for fiscal 2011-12. Though the allocation does not include any special funds, it is Rs177.35 crore more than last year’s budgetary allocation of Rs1,080.51 crore. In 2010-11, the Centre had given Rs50 crore to offset expenditure on the Commonwealth Games.
The biggest share in this year’s budgetary allocation is for urban development schemes under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). Delhi Government will get Rs900 crore in 2011-12, under the JNNURM schemes—Rs205.53 crore more than last year’s allocation.
“Of the Rs900 crore, Rs400 crore is meant for low-cost housing, which also includes Rs10 crore for projects under Rajiv Rattan Awas Yojana. The remaining Rs500 crore can be spent on urban infrastructure projects,” a senior Delhi government official said. The Centre provides for 35% of the cost of urban development projects under the JNNURM scheme.
The projects that would be taken up from this money have already been approved by the Centre. Delhi will have to generate the remaining 65% money to fund these projects. Chalo Dilli
“Our tax collections have increased this year. The excise collections have shown 19% increase. Our collections under the value-added tax and stamp duty has also seen an increase. We should not have difficulty in putting JNNURM projects on the fast track. Delhi has come up with a scheme to construct 35,000 flats for economically-weaker sections this year.
Officials said Delhi will get an extra Rs23 crore from the Centre under normal assistance.
