CCS meet discusses acquisitions for armed forces

The Cabinet Committee on Security met in New Delhi on Tuesday to decide on various defence acquisitions for the armed forces. The meeting was headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and Defence Minister A K Antony, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna, Home Minister P Chidambaram and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee attended it.

The meeting was headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and Defence Minister A K Antony, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna, Home Minister P Chidambaram and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee attended it.

Various defence deals such as the procurement of six mid air refuelling aircraft for the Indian Air Force (IAF) are waiting for clearance by the CCS and are expected to have come up for discussion during Tuesday’s meeting.

Procurement of systems for increasing and improving coastal security apparatus are also believed to have been discussed at the meeting.

After the terror attacks in Mumbai, the armed forces had fast tracked the acquisition process for various equipment to improve their operational preparedness. Equipment worth over Rs 2,500 crore was purchased under the accelerated acquisition process. The three services are looking to acquire defence equipment worth over $30 billion in next five years.
