City’s first women haat to be inaugurated in August

The city's first women's haat will finally be inaugurated next month, three years after the project was initiated.

The city's first women's haat will finally be inaugurated next month, three years after the project was initiated.

Once started, the stalls will be run by women and will sell ornaments, fabrics and kitchen products.

Though the structure was completed and handed over to the North Delhi corporation in November 2011, the inauguration was not done. "Despite the deliberative wing's clearance, the officials stopped working in the name of proposed trifurcation of the corporation," said Sarita Chaudhary, former deputy chairperson of Standing Committee of unified MCD.

Former Mayor Aarti Mehra had announced the construction of the haat at Asaf Ali car parking at Delhi Gate in 2009 and had assured that it will be ready in a year’s time. The budget was decided at R2 crores, which eventually went up to R5 Crores.

Earlier, the hub was expected to complete by the Commonwealth Games. The idea was to to create a shopping hub for people visiting Old Delhi and to give a platform for women to showcase their talent.
