A 9-year-old class four student of an MCD-run school was mowed down allegedly by a speeding school van near Nawada Metro station in southwest Delhi's Bindapur on Thursday morning.

According to police, the accident took place around 7.20 am when the boy was crossing the road when he was hit by the speeding school van. The deceased was identified as Mohammad Sarfaraz, who lived with his parents and three siblings at a rented accommodation in Nawada village.

After the accident, several local residents gathered at the spot and blocked the traffic on main Najafgarh-Tilak Nagar road for at least an hour. The protesters shouted slogans against Delhi Police and alleged that the police reached half an hour late after the PCR call.

The family members of the victim alleged that police were making no effort to arrest the errant cab driver even though the registration number of the school van was provided to them. Senior police officers, however, refuted the allegation and claimed that they are yet to ascertain the identity of the accused driver.

Nazma, elder sister of Sarfaraz, said they were sleeping in their house after Sehri (morning meal during Ramzan) when Sarfaraz woke up and went out to buy something from a shop across the road.

"A woman in our neighbourhood who witnessed the accident told us that my brother was trying to cross the road when a white van ferrying schoolchildren hit him. Due to the impact of the hit, my brother was tossed up in the air and hit the road. He suffered severe head injuries and was taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital where he was pronounced brought dead," said Nazma, adding she has lost her three siblings in the past one year.
