Wary of using the term in political discourse, the party instead wants it to be called either “Saffron Terror” or “Sangh Parivar Terror”.

“Hindu" is a wider term. Not every Hindu is a terrorist. The terrorist activities are carried out by Hindu extremists whose association with the saffron or Sangh Parivar organisations have been established,” a senior Congress functionary said.

“It is like saying Islamic terror, which very is derogatory. Not every Muslim is a terrorist,” he said.

On its part, the Congress fears the term will have larger repercussions if its usage is not stopped now. It also apprehends that that the BJP with the help of various saffron outfits might exploit it to its advantage in the electoral politics.

“Why should we use such words or terms which divide the country?” the leader said.

RSS ideologue MG alias Baburao Vaidya had recently expressed concern over the usage of “Hindu terror” and said the term was being used to “woo Muslim votes in the country and thereby defaming Hindus”.

“The word Hindu terror has earned its place in the media and no one knows who invented it. Though somebody gives credit to NCP president Sharad Pawar and others say it was Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh who has coined the concept,” Vaidya wrote in his weekly column in a local Marathi daily in Nagpur.

He had also appealed to all Hindu social and religious leaders to work to remove the blot of a terror tag given by some to the religion.
