Cops use teargas to control angry mob in outer Delhi
An 11-year-old girl died and three others were injured when the bike they were riding was hit by a tractor in Aman Vihar, little ahead of Rohini area in outer Delhi, on Saturday morning. The police said the girls were going to school when they met with the accident. HT reports.
An 11-year-old girl died and three others were injured when the bike they were riding was hit by a tractor in Aman Vihar, little ahead of Rohini area in outer Delhi, on Saturday morning. The police said the girls were going to school when they met with the accident.
Local residents caught hold of the driver of the tractor and started beating him. When the police interfered, the crowd turned violent and started pelting stones at them instead. The protest continued for the next two hours and the agitating people even tried to set the tractor on fire. The police had to use teargas shells to disperse the crowd. However, the people allege that the police lathicharged them.
“Kuldeep, 18, had left his Aman Vihar house at 7am to drop her two sisters — Sangeeta (9) and Pooja (12) — to the nearby Nihari Government School. Kuldeep also picked his neighbour Gayatri (11) as she also studies in the same school,” a senior police officer, requesting anonymity, said. Few metres away from their house, the bike was hit by the tractor and all four were thrown off.
The tractor was carrying a water tanker and Gayatri came under the wheel of it. All of them were rushed to a nearby hospital where Gayatri was declared brought dead while Pooja was discharged after first aid. Sangeeta is still in the ICU and Kuldeep is also recuperating at the hospital. The driver of tractor, Mohammad Shameen, tried to escape but people caught him and started beating him.
“We tried to take Shameen in our custody but the people turned violent. They started pelting stones so we had to call in extra force. Three teargas shells were fired to disperse the crowd and situation was brought under control within an hour,” the officer added.
The police denied the allegation that they used force on the residents.
