Identified as Gulbisha, 17 and Mumtaz, 15, the girls, both cousins, had left their homes in Pul Prahladpur near Badarpur for an adjacent government school and have not returned since, prompting the police to register a case of kidnapping at the behest of their harried parents.

"The girls stay at the Sonia Gandhi Camp and study in class eleven at the Rani Jhansi School. They left their house, telling their parents they were going to school, which was later found to have been closed on that day," said an officer.

After the girls didn't return till late afternoon, their parents called most of their acquaintances in the area and finally approached the police with a missing persons' complaint.

Gulibsha's father, Yusuf Rana, works at a local scrap dealer's shop, police said. They said they had a reason to suspect that the girls had been 'misled' into running away at the behest of their own friends.
