The roads in several cities in India and especially Mumbai are in such pathetic conditions and kept so intentionally so as to line the pockets of vested interests through filling potholes. There can be nothing more shameful than this kind of loot!

Remedy: Increased public awareness through media to force transparency, Change system of tendering - include professional and eminent citizens in technical evaluation, award of tenders should not be based on cost alone, there should be a nationwide common technical standards for road building, contracators should give minimum technical guarantees for roads built along with irrevocable bank guarantees for fixed periods, introduce compulsory professional qualifications for road contractor staff involved in road building - just civil engineering will not do, road building should be introduced as a specialised professional course - combination of engineering and management.
