The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is going to demolish the foot-over-bridge on Netaji Subhash Chandra Marg in Daryaganj, popularly known as lohe ka pul (iron bridge).
The civic agency said the public is not using the bridge due to its decrepit condition.
A final draft for dismantling the bridge has been prepared and a proposal will be tabled in the MCD's standing committee meeting next week. A subway-cum-underpass will replace the 45-year-old bridge.
Municipal Councillors have also claimed that the bridge has become a centre for peddling drugs and local goons.
“The railings of the Daryaganj bridge are in a dangerous state. The general public is not able to use it because anti-social elements frequent the place. We plan to dismantle the bridge and construct an underpass cum subway in place of it,” said a senior MCD official.
“But the legislative wing of the MCD has to approve it first.”
He said the zonal ward committee of the civic agency has given its nod to demolishing of the bridge.
The civic agency has already cleared way for the demolition of Kauria Pul foot over-bridge over Shyama Prasad Mukherjee (SPM) Marg.
The bridge connects Chandni Chowk to Kashmere Gate through a kilometre long railway over-bridge. It has been declared a damaged site.
