The Raza Samman, instituted by Bhopal-based Jawaharlal Darda Foundation, in the name of eminent artist SH Raza, carries a reward of Rs 5 lakh.

“Master artist SH Raza began his initial art training in Bhopal and achieved global acclaim. The award has been instituted in recognition of his invaluable contribution to art; it is also a tribute to his link with Nagpur. When he turns 100, we also hope to open India’s best art gallery in Raza’s name,” said Vijay Darda, chairman, Jawaharlal Darda Foundation.

Vice-President Hamid Ansari presented the award to the young artist, known for his narrative-oriented work.

Among those present at the ceremony were union culture minister Kumari Selja, Nandan Nilekani, chairman of unique identification authority of India and Ashok Vajpeyi, chairman of the Lalit Kala Akademi.

“I was 20 when I was brought to Nagpur by my brother-in-law. I had a difficult beginning as an artist. My message to young artist is: work hard and do not think of money,” said Raza, who returned to India after spending 60 years in France.
