A flash mob always generates excitement. And one that is going to be held across 100 cities in the world on the same day, is bound to create a buzz. Called the international Zouk Flash Mob, this worldwide event will see Delhi as the latest addition to its list this year. The flash mob, which will have a surprise dance act by 26 youngsters from the city, aims at promoting the dance form of Zouk and propagate love, unity and peace.

To be held on September 16 at a popular mall in the city, the flash mob will only last for five to seven minutes and have dancers perform to the number, Rehab, by Rihanna. “We want to show that if it’s possible to dance together, we can even live together peacefully. This flash mob crosses all borders of culture, social status, race, religion, nationality and personality. Here, dance is the only common language bringing people together and creating a positive energy,” says Anuj Gupta of Thank God For Dance, a dance academy based in Malviya Nagar. Gupta, along with dance instructor Shalini Sen has trained the Delhi participants over eight weekends for the flash mob, in which, over 3,000 Zouk dancers will participate across different cities in the world.

Out of the 26 dancers from Delhi, 22 had never learned Zouk before. “All of them are corporate professionals, none of them are professional dancers,” says Gupta. “The event is non-commercial and has no links to any commercial organisation. No fee was charged from the participants, who are all volunteers,” says Gupta.

Participants from Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, USA, UK, among others, will be participating. The videos of the flash mobs will be uploaded online.

What is Zouk?

Also called Brazilian Zouk or Lambazouk, it’s a couple dance style that evolved from Lambada in the early 1990s. It contains influences from other dance forms such as Salsa, Tango, Samba de Gafieira, Rumba and Forró. The word ‘zouk’ quite appropriately means ‘partying.’
