The 13-year-old domestic help rescued from a doctor couple’s home in Dwarka has told officials her employers gave her only two chappatis a day and made her slog for long hours.
“I would get only two chappatis in a day, without vegetables or dal. If the family went out to eat, I would get no food,” the girl from Jharkhand told the child welfare committee (CWC) on Friday.
"I was regularly beaten up by the couple and their 11-year-old daughter. They would hit me with a wooden ruler and pull my hair," she said in her statement, a copy of which is with HT.
The girl was on March 29 found locked up in the house of Dr Sanjay Verma and Dr Sunita Verma, ever since they went on holiday to Thailand on March 25.
She told the CWC the Vermas kept limited food for her while leaving and even put markings on the flour container. “Whatever I was allowed to take from the flour container lasted just two days. Once I exhausted it, I stopped eating. I was scared they would beat me up on their return,” the girl said.
The Vermas own a nursing home in Dwarka’s Sector 19 and also run a practice in Tilak Nagar. Dr Sanjay Verma is a
diabetologist and his wife a gynaecologist.
The Delhi Police on Friday registered a case of child abuse and bonded labour against them. The couple is scheduled to return from Thailand on Saturday.
Police said the girl was brought to Delhi by her uncle a year ago and handed over to a placement agency in Punjabi Bagh, which sent her to the Verma household around seven months ago.
The girl told CWC her torture started from the first day. She would be made to wake up at 6am. Her work would start with cleaning utensils, watering the plants, washing clothes and cleaning the bathroom.
The girl said she was never paid any salary and only her uncle got a one-time payment from the placement agency.
