A city court has slapped a fine of Rs 2 Lakh on a private power distribution company for allegedly harassing two men by registering a false FIR against them.

A city court has slapped a fine of Rs 2 Lakh on a private power distribution company for allegedly harassing two men by registering a false FIR against them.

Coming down heavily on distcoms for lodging cases against consumers without having credible evidence to prove the offence of theft, the court said this has been used as an extortion ploy.

Additional District Judge Kamini Lau directed the North Delhi Power Ltd (NDPL) to pay Rs 2 Lakh as damages for causing loss of reputation and financial harassment to B.R. Luthra and A.K. Luthra, co-owners of a city-based plastic manufacturing unit, who got acquitted in the power theft case.

A team of erstwhile Delhi Electric Supply Undertaking (DESU) had booked the two in 1989.
