East civic body to auction properties of tax defaulters

Hundreds of properties in East Delhi will be auctioned soon with the East Delhi Municipal Corporation attaching 6,000 properties of those owners who have not paid their property taxes. These properties cannot be purchased or sold as the corporation has sent information to the sub-registrar, asking him not to allow any transaction.

Action has been initiated against 6,100 property owners who have not paid tax for many years and owe at least Rs. 1.5 lakh to the civic body. The property owners owe around Rs. 57 crore as tax to the municipal corporation for period up to March 31, 2004 (till the time the rateable value method of taxation was in force).

As per the notices issued, the properties will be auctioned if owners fail to clear the dues within 15 days. "Coercive action is being taken on a day to day basis against tax defaulters. Warrant of Distress for attachment of properties of the defaulters have been issued. In some cases, attaching of properties has already begun and a copy of the said orders are being sent to the sub-registrar for not registering the sale and purchase of those properties which have been attached by this office," said a senior corporation official.

Out of the 6,100 properties, 6,000 are in Shahadra (south) zone while 100 are in Shahadra (north).
