The KK Birla Foundation has invited nominations for the 21st annual Saraswati Samman and Vyas Samman for the year 2011.
The Saraswati Samman is given to an Indian citizen for outstanding work in any of the 22 languages listed in the Schedule VIII of the Constitution, while Vyas Samman is in recognition of literary works in Hindi. The prize money for the two awards is Rs 7.5 lakh and Rs 2.5 lakh, respectively, apart from citation and a plague.
Works in Hindi are eligible for both awards, as the language is included in Schedule VIII of the Constitution.
A Chayan Parishad and a Chayan Samiti will make the final decisions on the Saraswati Samman and Vyas Samman, respectively. While the Parishad is presided over by former Chief Justice of India Justice GB Patnaik, the Samiti is headed by well-known litterateur Prof Surya Prasad Dixit, former head of Hindi department, University of Lucknow.
The foundation encourages the participation of literary and academic fraternities in the awards process. Works published during 2001-2010 (both years inclusive) will be eligible.
The Vyas Samman was bestowed on Prof Vishwanath Prasad Tiwari last year for Phir Bhi Kuch Rah Jayega (poems), while the Saraswati Samman for 2010 is under consideration.
