The accused, Savneet Singh, has told the police that it was just a mishap and that after the collision he drove to a site about 2km away.

“It was just an accident,” Savneet Singh told the police when he was asked how he lost control over his Mercedes car and crushed 17-year-old Atul Arora on Sunday.

Police claim that Singh “showed no remorse” when they tried explaining to him that Arora who had landed on his car’s windshield after the head-on collision, would have been saved if he had stopped.

Singh told police that after the accident, he drove the car to a site, about 2 kilometres from the accident spot. “He stopped to check the damage on his car and parked the car there for the night fearing he would be caught but the plot owner refused to allow him to park on his land. They had an argument after which Singh drove away from there,” said DCP (Crime) Madhur Verma.

Police say apart from the evidence that they have against Singh, they are also relying on the plot owner to be their witness and identify Singh and his cousin.

Singh told police that after the argument, he drove to a friend’s home in Rajouri Garden and parked the car outside his house. To avoid being detected, the cousins then removed the number plate and hid it in the car’s trunk.

A man, who saw the two inside the car when it hit Arora, will also be an important eyewitness. A friend dropped them home in somebody else’s car. On Monday morning, they saw the news on television and informed their family about it.

Singh wanted to get rid of his car at the earliest. He had purchased the car from a used car dealer in Janakpuri last year, but had not got his insurance renewed after it expired recently.

During interrogation, Singh confessed his cousin Hashmeet was also with him at the time of the accident.

“He confessed that he and Hashmeet had come to Paschim Vihar to eat when they received a call about fire in a shop next to theirs. He claimed he was worried about his shop and was speeding. Seconds before he hit Arora , he over took a tempo from the wrong side but momentarily lost control on his car and hit Arora,” an officer said.
