From Sunday, depart from brand new terminal at IGI

Air travellers would fly out of the brand new domestic departure terminal 1-D of Delhi airport from Sunday. It would replace the 70-year-old terminal 1-B but that would happen in phases, so expect some confusion for at least one month.

The new terminal has almost double the space compared to 1-B and double the number of security channels and check-in counters. The first airlines to shift from 1B to the new terminal would be Jet Airways and JetLite.

Most airlines would operate from the new terminal but Air India (domestic) and MDLR Airlines would stay on at terminal 1-A. Go Air and Jagson Airlines too would shift to 1-A instead of 1D. The final schedule of shifting is yet to be announced by Delhi International Airport Ltd. (DIAL).

As three different terminals will operate for at least a month, passengers who don’t know from where their airline operates would have a tough time moving between terminals. But DIAL said it would deploy golf carts to ferry passengers from terminal to terminal.

A DIAL spokesman said there would be signs to guide passengers to the right terminal and more than 30 trial runs have been carried out over the past four months. DIAL will also distribute leaflets and deploy marshals to inform flyers.

Traffic routing at the domestic terminal would also be changed. Passengers would reach the first floor of 1-D by driving up a ramp where all security checks would take place. For boarding, passengers would come downstairs.

Only cars would be allowed on the ramp. Buses and pedestrians would reach the terminal’s ground floor.

DIAL has taken the help of experts from Munich Airport to ensure smooth shifting of operations from 1-B to 1-D.
