"India is supporting Fiji's membership. One should not mix sport with politics," Bhanot told reporters.

Fiji has been suspended from the Commonwealth on Sep 1 following its failure to meet the deadline to come out with a time schedule to hold credible elections in the country no later than October 2010.

The powerful Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) has asked the Commonwealth Games Federation to exclude Fiji from next year's Games.

CMAG had taken the decision after its meeting in New York on Sep 26.
