Girl escapes bike, run over by bus

A 21-year-old accountant talking on the phone while crossing a busy east Delhi road was knocked down by a bike Wednesday morning and before she could regain her balance, a bus ran her over.

Priya Jain, a resident of Radheypuri in Krishna Nagar, was on way to work to an electronics showroom in Swasthya Vihar at around 11.30am when a speeding biker ran into her, said DCP (east) Prabhakar, who uses only one name.

As she was trying to regain her footing, a DTC bus, plying on route 320, crushed her.

Late for work, she was calling up office to inform that she was on her way.

"The accident took place opposite her workplace," said the officer.

Her co-workers informed the police and an emergency response vehicle rushed her to a local hospital, but she was declared brought dead, said Prabhakar.

A commerce graduate from Delhi University's School of Open Learning, Jain had been working with Unique Infoway since March.

Eldest of the two siblings, she used to give tuitions as well to supplement her family's meagre income, said RK Jain, 71, her grandfather. Her father, Deepak Jain, doesn't have a job.

She had applied for MBA at IGNOU and was to submit her fee on Thursday. The family denied that Jain was on the phone, but did concede that she might be in a hurry as she had left home later than usual.
